A lot has happened in 375 years. Lewes has been ransacked by pirates, bombarded by the British, and hounded by German U-boats. The State of Delaware can trace its roots back to Lewes as the site of the first settlement on Delaware soil. It was a small settlement in 1631 that set up a course of events as complex and intriguing as any in colonial America. From claims by William Penn and Lord Baltimore to the territory, to raids, burnings and court decisions, the small settlement of Swanendael in 1631
was the legal basis for the establishment of Delaware as a place apart -- and ultimately to take its spot as "The First State." Join us in Lewes in 2006 as we celebrate 375 years of culture, history and beauty in Delaware!
