Come celebrate our Dutch roots as we remember the Dutch settlers who established the first European settlement in Delaware. As the prominent Delaware historian, C.A. Weslager, once wrote, “If William Penn had failed to prove that Lewes was settled prior to 1632, Lord Baltimore would have been declared owner of the territory in dispute. The state of Delaware would be non-existent and Lewes would now be part of the state of Maryland.”
Please join us for our ceremonial activities on Friday April 21 and for our festive "Happy Birthday Lewes!" party on April 22; the Kalmar Nyckel will be in port and there will be cake, a barber shop quartet and plenty of activities for children as we gather to celebrate the heritage of Lewes and of the First State. Other activities that are ongoing include the new exhibit at the Zwaanendael Museum, "Lewes: The First Town in the First State," a tulip festival sponsored by Lewes in Bloom, nature and history programs at Cape Henlopen State Park and other programs at the Zwaanendael Museum and The Lewes Historical Society.
